Lebanon’s official television station broadcast a videotaped appeal for the release of American hostages. Part of the tape, made in Washington by members of the hostages’ families and by freed hostages, was carried on an evening news program seen in Muslim West Beirut in hopes that the kidnapers would see it and respond. Six Americans are missing in Lebanon, all believed abducted by extremist Muslim groups. One such group, Islamic Jihad, claims to hold three of the Americans and to have killed a fourth, but no body has been found.
