OSLO — The Norwegian Nobel Committee today selected the winner of the 1986 Nobel Peace Prize after narrowing the field of 81 nominees--ranging from South African black leaders Nelson and Winnie Mandela to Irish rock star philanthropist Bob Geldof--to two, Nobel Institute Director Jakob Sverdrup said.
He promised the decision would remain Norway’s best-kept secret until the winner is announced on Oct. 14.
Sverdrup refused to name the two final candidates, but admitted the Institute had received overwhelming outside support for Geldof, whose charity concerts have brought famine relief to parts of drought-stricken Africa.
