Nicholas Daniloff, the American journalist held prisoner for 13 days by the Soviet KGB, said Friday that “my heart goes out” to fellow journalist Terry A. Anderson and the other U.S. hostages held in Lebanon.

Daniloff’s emotional remarks came in a surprise appearance before hundreds of media representatives from around the world who had gathered to hear retired Chief Justice Warren Burger launch a three-year celebration of the U.S. Constitution’s 200th anniversary.

“My intellect is here to praise the Constitution and the Bill of Rights,” Daniloff said. “But my heart goes out to my brother journalist, Terry Anderson of The Associated Press, who is held as a hostage in Lebanon, as are several other American citizens.”

His voice breaking, Daniloff pledged to the hostages, “We shall not forget you.”

Anderson and David P. Jacobsen, another of the three Americans held by the Islamic Jihad in Lebanon, appeared in a videotape released Friday by their captors. Both hostages complained that the Reagan Administration was ignoring their situation but had gone to great lengths to free Daniloff.
