Third Subway Line to Be Built in Peking
From Reuters
PEKING —
A third subway line will be built in Peking to relieve the capital’s seriously congested transport system, the People’s Daily overseas edition said Friday.
It said the new line will run for 4.4 miles beneath the Avenue of Eternal Peace, one of Peking’s main thoroughfares, and will link the two existing lines.
The present routes, completed in 1969 and 1984, both cross the avenue. The newspaper said the two lines, despite carrying 60% more passengers than their planned capacity, handle only 4% of the 9 million trips made by Peking residents each day.
