IMPOSSIBLE DREAM

Listen for salsa singer Ruben Blades’ next LP--in the works four years--to infuse politics with the mysticism of Colombian novelist Gabriel Garcia Marquez.

“Agua de Luna” (“Moon Water”), from Electra Records, is due out before year’s end, with seven of eight cuts inspired by Marquez short stories. Blades told us he’s been jetting from the set of Universal’s “Milagro Beanfield War” (he portrays a small-town sheriff caught between developers and New Mexican farmers) to NYC to cut the master. The U.S. release will include English translations--and both versions will urge listeners to read Marquez’s work.

The LP’s political theme: “We (Latin Americans) can make things happen, if we move,” said Blades. “We should not be determined by our past. We can re-invent ourselves.” The title refers to “an impossibility, water on the moon. But in Latin America or the Caribbean, everything is possible.”
