The World : Tutu Installs Successor

Share

Desmond Tutu, who was enthroned last month as Archbishop of Cape Town, installed a white clergyman, the Very Rev. George D. Buchanan, as Anglican bishop of Johannesburg, the position Tutu previously held. Echoing Tutu’s anti-apartheid views, Buchanan told the congregation at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Johannesburg after his installation that few people know one another across race lines in South Africa and that the church must work to overcome such divisions. Buchanan, born in South Africa, obtained a master of divinity degree at England’s Oxford University in 1960. He served as a deacon in Canterbury Cathedral and as a priest in New York before returning to his native country.
