2ND TV STATION BEGINS IN TURKEY
Turkey inaugurated a second television channel this week that will initially serve the country’s three largest cities.
Officials of the state-run Turkish Radio and Television Corporation, which controls both channels, said the channel that went on the air Monday will broadcast programs with emphasis on cultural events.
They said it will also broadcast, for the first time in Turkey, an English-language nightly news bulletin.
The second channel’s programs are being developed by Istanbul television studios and have an initial target audience of 12 million people in Turkey’s three largest cities: Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir.
Television broadcasting began in Turkey in 1968.
