Somalia has agreed to normalize relations with the Soviet Union, the official news agency Sonna reported. Foreign Minister Abdirahman Jama Barre told the news agency that he and Soviet Foreign Minister Eduard A. Shevardnadze reached agreement in New York last weekend. Somalia’s break with Moscow was a side effect of its undeclared war with Ethiopia in 1977. The Soviets, despite a treaty with Somalia, supplied weapons to Ethiopia. This new agreement follows a cautious rapprochement between Somalia and Ethiopia.
