Conference Digging a $50,000 Hole in City’s Sewage Budget
The superpower summit is putting the city of Reykjavik into a $50,000 hole.
City officials preparing the site of the meeting between President Reagan and Soviet leader Mikhail S. Gorbachev decided that the two leaders should have an unobscured view of the bay and mountains beyond.
That meant pouring mounds of earth back into the deep pit dug for a sewage project outside the Hofdi, the picturesque bayside house where the leaders will meet today and Sunday.
“As soon as the leaders are gone, we will dig the hole again,” said Deputy Mayor Magnus Oskarsson.
The cost to the municipality is estimated at $50,000.
