A tentative settlement to a teachers strike in suburban Chicago was reached, but walkouts in nine other school districts in Pennsylvania, Illinois and Ohio kept more than 34,000 students out of class. Faculty members of Proviso East and West high schools in Illinois are scheduled to meet Monday and are expected to decide to return to work Tuesday, school and union officials said. A one-day strike by 37 teachers in Oakland, Ill., ended Friday. Negotiations resulted in a base pay increase of $270 to $13,720. The 488 students are to return to class Tuesday. In addition, strikes continued at two community colleges in Illinois and at Temple University in Philadelphia.
