The Shia Muslim militia Amal, in a Syrian-sponsored peace effort, lifted a 12-day siege imposed on a Palestinian refugee camp in southern Lebanon. The move came after the Palestinians reportedly handed over some of their weapons and five guerrillas accused by Amal of firing on a militia checkpoint in the area, 40 miles south of Beirut. An Amal source said the Palestinians kept their heavy weapons and “fighting could flare up at any time.” The Shia Muslims are striving to prevent the Palestinians from rebuilding a guerrilla base in southern Lebanon.
