Final jury selection and opening arguments in the fraud trial of former auto maker John DeLorean in Detroit were scheduled for Oct. 21, court officials said. Meanwhile, sources said DeLorean, 61, who is accused of diverting nearly $9 million of backers’ money to his own use, was given a dressing down Friday by U.S. District Judge Julian Cook. Sources close to the case told Reuters that Cook criticized him for discussing the case in a radio interview and reminded him a gag order barring principals from talking about details of the case with reporters. DeLorean declined to speak at length with reporters when he emerged from the private session with Cook in the judge’s chambers. DeLorean, who briefly built sports cars at a factory in Northern Ireland, has pleaded innocent to charges of racketeering, fraud, tax evasion and other violations.
