Socialists Lag in Greek Elections
The Socialists of Prime Minister Andreas Papandreou lost votes in local elections to their political rivals on both the right and left, according to results announced today.
Conservative challengers got more than 42% of the votes cast Sunday in the three major cities--Athens, Piraeus and Salonika--and support for incumbent Socialist mayors declined to about 30%. Communist candidates got just over 20% of the vote in each of the three cities. Since no candidates won majorities, runoffs will be held next Sunday in the three largest cities and 245 smaller urban centers.
