Hartford, Conn.-based United Technologies, the United States’ 16th-largest industrial concern, said its operating earnings fell in the third quarter due to weakness in the controls, defense and space systems groups. However, it said total revenue and profits were up significantly on the continued strength of its commercial jet engine spare parts business. The company posted third-quarter net income of $108.2 million, compared to net income for continuing operations of $147.5 million a year earlier. Including discontinued operations, UTC reported a net loss of $45.6 million in last year’s third quarter.
