Norwegian tennis player Morten Roenneberg was given a 65-day unconditional prison term by an Oslo probate court for admitted purchase and abuse of narcotics, the Norwegian news agency Norsk Telegrambyra reported.

Prosecutor Lasse Qvigstad asked for an unconditional 75-day term and defense counsel Morten Kjensli for a suspended sentence. Roenneberg was granted two weeks to consider an appeal.

Judge Carl-Hugo Lund found it to be an extenuating circumstance that Roenneberg, 22, the national singles champion in 1984 and 1985, had his first contact with drugs when he, at an age of 15, was sent abroad alone to play professional tennis.
