Police raided Dhaka University dormitories, made more than 150 arrests and confiscated guns and ammunition on the eve of voting expected to confirm Lt. Gen. Hussain Mohammed Ershad as president of Bangladesh. Authorities said that at least three people have been killed in sporadic violence connected with a movement to boycott the election, which political opponents say will be rigged to legitimize Ershad’s martial-law regime. Opposition parties have called for a 12-hour general strike on election day.
