Walesa Wants Sanctions Lifted

Lech Walesa and nine other prominent Poles today urged President Reagan to lift the remaining economic sanctions against Poland. They said Western help is indispensable for Poland in overcoming its economic crisis.

Walesa, a founder of the banned Solidarity free trade union movement, and the others called on Reagan to restore most-favored-nation trading status, under which Poland would be accorded the same trading conditions as any other nation regarding tariffs, quotas and the like, and to grant access to guaranteed governmental financial credits “on reasonable and economically justified conditions.”
