Senate Corrects Tax Bill, Adds Breaks

The Senate voted Thursday to correct more than 250 errors in the tax-overhaul bill awaiting President Reagan’s signature, and added about $50-million worth of new tax breaks for selected projects and businesses.

The “enrollment resolution” was approved by voice vote. Because of the Senate amendments, it must be considered again by the House.

Reagan will sign the bill with or without the corrections, although the White House has not announced a date for the ceremonies. But congressional leaders want the changes made before the signing to avoid delaying various construction projects affected by the measure.

Sen. Bob Packwood (R-Ore.), chairman of the Finance Committee, said projects in 38 states, ranging from sewage-treatment plants to college stadiums, could be delayed unless the corrections are made.

The House originated the enrollment resolution when it passed the tax bill last month. But instead of just correcting the mistakes made when the bill was typed, the House tacked on several provisions.

The Senate knocked out some of the provisions the House had added and tacked on some of its own.
