Chevron Corp. and San Francisco State University have announced inauguration of an 18-month graduate credentialing program for retired Chevron professionals interested in becoming math and science teachers in grades 7-12. Chevron said it will contribute up to $385,000 over the 18-month period to launch the program which is expected to draw as many as 105 students at three teaching schools--San Francisco State, the University of Houston and the University of New Orleans. The U.S. Department of Education, the American Federation of Teachers and the National Education Assn. all say that the nation will need as many as 200,000 new science teachers by 1990, and the prospects are poor of getting that many. “We felt that given the significant shortage of science and math teachers, we had an opportunity to encourage (retired Chevron professionals) to contribute their knowledge and experience to our nation’s schools,” a Chevron spokesman said.
