“Smiles of a Summer Night.” Embassy. $29.95. Many critics rank this rare Ingmar Bergman comedy among the Swedish director’s best works, but while there are moments of humor, charm and sensuality, the picture is far too mannered, tedious and silly without being funny. Fans of Stephen Sondheim’s stage and screen musical “A Little Night Music” and Woody Allen’s marvelous film “A Midsummer Night’s Sex Comedy” might enjoy seeing how “Smiles” led to both. However, this confused gambol of marital games isn’t nearly as much fun as Bergman’s later “About These Women,” where he allowed the farcical elements free rein, and “Smiles” remains watchable mainly because of Gunnar Fischer’s soft-lit photography.
