12 Strike Supporters Arrested at Meat Plant

MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa — Twelve people in a crowd of about 300 strikers and sympathizers were arrested Monday while protesting the hiring of replacements at Swift Independent Packing Co., authorities said.
Local 50 of the National Brotherhood of Packinghouse and Industrial Workers struck Oct. 1 after the company asked it to accept a wage cut of 80 cents an hour, to $8 an hour, union officials said.
