The World : Europeans OK Drug Curbs

Twelve Western European nations agreed on a plan to crack down on drug trafficking but also decided to work toward more open borders for law-abiding travelers. The agreements came at the end of a one-day meeting of interior ministers of the 12 European Communities nations. The ministers agreed on steps that include the confiscation of drug traffickers’ assets and adding more European narcotics officers in drug-producing countries. The ministers also agreed to appoint a working group to study the ultimate abolition of frontier formalities for Common Market citizens and the construction of a “fence” around the 12 nations with a requirement that non-residents have visas to enter.
