Workers at a Santa Ana post office intercepted a package of fruit containing 77 live Oriental fruit fly larvae. The 12-pound package had been mailed illegally from Hawaii first class. Hawaiian fruit may not be imported into California unless it is specifically cleared by agriculture officials. “If the package hadn’t been damp and smelly, it might have gotten through,” said Gera Curry, spokeswoman for the state Department of Food and Agriculture.
