Sri Lanka to Heed Pope’s Call for Truce

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka — The government said Tuesday that it will observe a truce with Tamil guerrillas Oct. 27 in response to an appeal by Pope John Paul II, and it urged rebels to do the same.
There was no immediate response from the guerrillas who want to set up an independent homeland for Tamils in the north and east of the Sinhalese-dominated island.
The Pope earlier this month called for suspension of all fighting on Oct. 27, when he will be host at a meeting in the Italian city of Assisi of representatives of different religions who will pray for world peace.
