Union Pacific, the New York-based railroad and energy concern, said its third-quarter profit jumped 18% mainly due to a sharp increase in its railroad earnings. Carloadings and revenue ton-miles were up 4% and 5%, respectively. Operating expenses of Union Pacific’s railroad subsidiary declined 9%, however, primarily due to continued cost improvements, productivity gains and lower fuel costs.
