China and Portugal said they have reached broad agreement on the future of the Portuguese-run territory of Macao on the south China coast. However, a statement issued by the Chinese Foreign Ministry and the Portuguese Embassy after two days of talks in Peking gave no details. Portugal has already conceded China’s sovereignty over Macao, a small enclave it has ruled since the 16th Century. China has said it wants Macao’s future to mirror that of Hong Kong, 40 miles to the east, which Peking has promised broad autonomy after it reverts to Chinese control in 1997.
