Vatican Sees $56-Million Deficit

VATICAN CITY —
The Vatican today forecast a record $56-million budget deficit for 1986 and made an urgent appeal for the faithful to contribute more money to close the gap.
The Vatican also said in a statement that it wanted to dispel the notion of “presumed Vatican riches.” It said the artworks and cultural artifacts owned by the Roman Catholic Church constitute “a treasure for all humanity” and cannot be sold.
