The World : Poles Bar Walesa Passport

Polish authorities turned down Solidarity founder Lech Walesa’s last-minute, handwritten application for a passport to receive an award in Los Angeles, a Walesa aide said in Warsaw. The labor movement figure said he was “sorry indeed” and added that he hopes to travel to the United States someday. Walesa said earlier this week that he had decided not to apply for a passport because he was afraid the Polish government would not allow him to return home to his family. He is to be honored tonight with an Integrity Award from the Santa Monica-based John-Roger Foundation at a banquet in the Beverly Hilton.
