Infant Health Woes of 3rd World Cited by U.N.
About 4.6 million children under age 5 die of diarrhea in developing countries every year, the U.N. Environment Program said in a report published Thursday that painted a grim picture of health in the developing world.
The Nairobi-based agency’s 1986 State of the Environment report said, “A baby born in a developing country is 10 times more likely to die before its first birthday than one born in an industrialized nation.”
The report said that illnesses such as diarrhea, malaria and bilharzia in the Third World could be prevented through sound management of water resources and proper sanitation.
