WELLESLEY, Mass. — Forty Wellesley College students arrested while protesting the school’s financial ties to South Africa were in custody early today, and classmates boycotted school.
The students, charged with trespassing and disorderly conduct after lying down on roads at two college entrances on Thursday, were held in a National Guard armory overnight because they refused to give police their real names.
“The students all said they were Winnie Mandela,” said senior Leslie Dunbar, 21, of New York.
The college’s trustees voted 17 to 14 earlier Thursday against a motion to divest its portfolio of $41 million worth of South Africa-related investments.
As the students were being arraigned today, other students boycotted classes. One student estimated that about half the exclusive institution’s 2,200 students were involved.
