The entire Malaysian railway, with hundreds of miles of track, buildings, locomotives, coaches and other facilities, is for rent for a nominal sum of one ringgit, about 38 U.S. cents.

Finance Minister Daim Zainuddin told Parliament when presenting the federal budget Friday that, as part of the government’s privatization program, the state-owned rail system can be leased at the nominal price by a firm that will operate it. The railroad has steadily lost money for many years and owes the treasury more than $192 million.

Daim said details of the deal could be worked out with anyone who is interested and able to operate the system.
