The State : Kaiser Workers OK Strike
About 6,000 members of the Service Employees International Union voted to strike today against Kaiser Permanente clinics and hospitals in Northern California. Negotiations between Kaiser, one of the world’s largest health maintenance organizations, and union Local 250 have been in progress since early August, and union spokesman Bob Muscat said there has been virtually no movement. “This will be no ordinary strike,” Muscat said, pointing out that more than 80% of the union members h1633951862union plans to solicit Kaiser enrollees for pledges that they will drop from the plan unless a settlement is reached. Issues in the dispute include a management demand for a three-year wage freeze and a two-tier wage structure that would mean new workers would earn 30% less than current employees.
