Boeing Co., the world’s leading passenger jet manufacturer, reported a 19% increase in third-quarter net income on a 22.6% revenue gain.

The aerospace giant said that its earnings for the three months ended Sept. 30 rose to $157 million from $132 million in the third-quarter of 1985.

Sales for the quarter rose to $3.8 billion from $3.1 billion.

It said increased sales volume and higher interest income were partially offset by higher spending on research and other expenses in developing new jet aircraft.

In the third quarter, Boeing received orders worth $4.8 billion for 51 jet planes and 74 de Havilland turboprop commuter planes, pushing the nine-month total of orders to $16.9 billion for 298 jets and 88 turboprops.

For the first nine months, Boeing said its earnings rose 25.4% to $474 million from $378 million a year earlier.

Revenue rose 21.3% to $11.4 billion from $9.4 billion.

The first nine months of 1985 produced orders for 181 jets worth $5.6 billion.

U.S. government and foreign military sales in the first nine months totaled $4.6 billion, a $700-million increase over the same period last year, Boeing said.
