An Israeli military court jailed for life the blind leader of a Palestinian guerrilla band found guilty of killing British tourist Paul Appleby and an Israeli businesswoman in Arab East Jerusalem. Ala Edin Bazian, 28, was arrested on suspicion of heading a seven-member gang that shot Appleby to death last April near Jerusalem’s Garden Tomb, revered by some Christian groups as Jesus’ burial place. Bazian, who lost his sight in a 1979 bombing attempt, was among 1,150 convicted guerrillas freed by Israel in a May, 1985, prisoner exchange for three Israeli soldiers captured in Lebanon.
