TV REVIEW : ‘JOURNAL’ OFFERS PROPOSITION GUIDE
For voters who haven’t been following the campaigns on the most controversial of next week’s ballot propositions, Channel 28 offers a quick summary in an hourlong “KCET Journal” at 9 tonight.
If you have been keeping up with the political news, however, there’s no need to bother. Much of the program merely rehashes the campaign rhetoric without shedding light on the veracity of anyone’s statements.
The idea of “Propositions ‘86--A Voter’s Guide” is to explain the background and the pros and cons of Proposition 61 (to place a salary cap on public officials), Proposition 63 (to make English the state’s official language), Proposition 64 (to classify AIDS as a communicable disease), Proposition 65 (to crack down on toxic waste disposal) and Proposition U (to restrict growth in Los Angeles).
Produced by Frank Feldinger and hosted by Jess Marlow, the program does attempt to flesh out the debate over each measure with some perspective, but the helpfulness varies from segment to segment.
It’s useful to know who is financing the campaigns for Proposition 64 and against Proposition 65, for example, but not to hear someone analyze the effectiveness of Paul Gann’s TV commercial for Proposition 61, nor to see Chevy Chase mugging on the campaign trail for Proposition 65.
