Iran Uncovers Gang of Smugglers on Persian Gulf Coast
A 50-member smuggling ring that dealt in goods ranging from hunting birds to American cigarettes has been uncovered in the Iranian Persian Gulf coast province of Bushehr, the Islamic Republic newspaper said Tuesday.
The paper quoted Bushehr’s chief prosecutor as saying one smuggler was injured in a clash with police and later died in the hospital.
He said that contraband taken out of the country by the gang included high-quality silk rugs, 112 bales of carpets and 60 rare hunting birds, including falcons.
They smuggled in videocassette recorders, television sets, videotapes, radios, clothes, wristwatches, cigarettes and lighters, he said.
