The United Farm Workers union, backed by New York City’s major trade unions, began a nationwide boycott against A&P; groceries after the huge supermarket chain’s refusal to pull California grapes from its shelves. The UFW charges that the grapes are contaminated by pesticides that cause cancer and birth defects. The boycott was kicked off by UFW President Cesar Chavez after a demonstration in front of a Greenwich Village A&P; store by hundreds of union members, including activists from flight attendants to knitwear workers.
