Iraq said its navy and air force sank five Iranian gunboats today when they tried to approach Iraqi territorial waters in the Persian Gulf. A sixth Iranian gunboat was damaged and retreated, the Iraqi military command said in a statement broadcast by state-run Baghdad Radio. There was no immediate comment from Iran. The Iraqi statement said Iraqi navy ships, helicopter gunships and warplanes took part in the attack and returned safely to their bases. No precise location was given for the reported attack.
