Chile’s military government lifted the state of siege in three more rural provinces and announced that another 200 political exiles will be allowed to return to Chile. It was the third time authorities have eased restrictions in sparsely populated parts of the country since the nationwide state of siege was declared Sept. 7 after a failed assassination attempt against President Augusto Pinochet. The state of siege remains in effect in areas where more than 90% of the 12 million Chileans live. The Interior Ministry said Pinochet has authorized the return of 200 political exiles barred from Chile since the military took power in a 1973 coup.
