A Japanese gangster’s grenade may have exploded accidentally, causing the violent plunge of a Thai jetliner that injured 62 people Sunday, Japanese press reports said. Investigators have said they believe an explosion occurred on the A-300 Airbus before a loss of pressure caused the wild descent and an emergency landing at Osaka, Japan. Kyodo News Service said metal fragments found in a rear toilet may have come from a U.S.-type fragmentation grenade. Osaka police reportedly were investigating two Japanese men who boarded the Bangkok-Osaka flight in Manila. One is an alleged gang member from Osaka, who remains hospitalized with injuries suffered in the accident.
