Atty. Gen. Charlie Graddick, a Democrat, dropped his write-in campaign for governor today, saying his chief goal in the election is to prevent a split in the state’s conservative vote.

“I have determined that my write-in campaign for governor cannot win,” he said at a news conference. Graddick’s pullout was aimed at preventing Lt. Gov. Bill Baxley, the Democratic nominee, from winning in a splintered field over Graddick and Republican Guy Hunt. Graddick has charged the courts stole a tight runoff race with Baxley from him.
