The Nation : Speed Limit Hike Backed

Share

Transportation Secretary Elizabeth Hanford Dole endorsed efforts to raise the 55-m.p.h. speed limit on rural interstate highways. Dole, making a brief campaign stop in Windsor Locks, Conn., said she thinks states should be allowed to raise the speed limit on rural interstates if it does not create a safety hazard. Lawmakers discussed raising the limit to 65 m.p.h. on rural interstates, but no agreement was reached before Congress adjourned. “I feel that some flexibility is permissible,” Dole said at a news conference with GOP gubernatorial candidate Julie D. Belaga.
