Striking South African gold miners returned to work with full shifts reporting at the three mines affected by a four-day walkout, mine owners said. Marcel Bolding, a spokesman for the National Union of Mineworkers, said that up to 35,000 men were involved in the stoppage at the three mines. Mine owners put the number of strikers at 25,000. The walkout began when officials of the Gold Fields group of mine owners rejected an industry settlement granting increases of 19% to 23% on average wages of about $180 a month.
