About 2,000 people joined hands across the Columbia River to support plutonium processing and other nuclear projects at the Hanford Reservation in Washington state. The rally was organized by scientists and local business people, and speakers warned that jobs could be lost unless nuclear power projects continue at the federal installation, site of a reactor similar to the crippled Chernobyl plant in the Soviet Union. Also at Hanford are a pair of plutonium processing plants shut recently because of safety problems. A similar rally was staged last week by opponents of a possible high-level nuclear waste repository at Hanford.
