Most mothers with children under 18 stay at home, despite the influx of women into the labor force over the years, according to an American Enterprise Institute study. Using statistics from the Census Bureau and the Labor Department, the survey found that 41% of women--married or unmarried--with children younger than 18 were employed full-time at least one week during 1985. The findings, said Douglas J. Besharov and Michelle M. Dally of the AEI, a policy research group, run contrary to a widespread public belief that almost all mothers work full-time.
