U.S. military officials trying to trace American servicemen listed as missing in action inspected a site where a U.S. warplane may have crashed during the Vietnam War, officials said. Lt. Col. Joe Harvey, head of the Hawaii-based Joint Casualty Resolution Center, said in Bangkok, Thailand, that the possible crash site is a few miles outside of Haiphong, the major seaport in northern Vietnam. Harvey said: “We did not see much, just a crater. The Vietnamese had correlated the site with one of the MIA (missing in action) case files that we presented earlier, and we will have to see if the correlation is correct.” He refused to provide details and said there was no visible wreckage.
