U.N. Assembly Backs Nicaragua on Contras

UNITED NATIONS — The General Assembly on Monday called on the United States to comply with a World Court ruling ordering an end to U.S. support for Nicaraguan contras.
The vote on the resolution was 94 to 3, with 47 abstentions. El Salvador and Israel joined the United States in voting against it.
Nicaragua asked for a General Assembly vote after the United States vetoed the same resolution a week ago in the Security Council.
The International Court of Justice, or World Court, ruled last June 27 that U.S. aid to the rebels violated international law.
