OKLAHOMA CITY — Republican Sen. Don Nickles was projected as the winner in his bid for reelection over veteran Democratic Rep. James R. Jones, the former House Budget Committee chairman.
The race between Nickles, 36, and Jones, 47, was the most expensive in state history, topping $5 million.
Nickles, seeking a second term, received two campaign visits by President Reagan. Jones, a seven-term congressman, was a major player in congressional budget battles in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
