ATLANTA — Incumbent Democratic Gov. Joe Frank Harris coasted to a new term, defeating Republican Guy Davis.
Davis, a lawyer and former police officer, was unable to raise the money needed to fight Harris’ campaign for a second four-year term.
Democratic Rep. Wyche Fowler was the projected winner in the Senate race, ousting incumbent Republican Mack Mattingly, Georgia’s first Republican senator this century.
Fowler, 46, won a bitter Democratic primary by scoring more than 50% and crushing former White House aide Hamilton Jordan’s hopes of forcing a runoff.
Mattingly, 55, is a small businessman who never held office until he defeated Democratic Sen. Herman Talmadge in 1980.
In congressional races, Democratic Rep. J. Roy Rowland defeated Republican Eddie McDowell, while Democratic Rep. Doug Barnard Jr. was elected to a sixth term, defeating Jim Hill, a Republican.
