CONCORD — Nuclear power proponent Gov. John Sununu won reelection to a third term against Democratic challenger Paul McEachern, who had vowed to stop the $5-billion Seabrook nuclear power plant.
Republican Sen. Warren Rudman, who co-authored the Gramm-Rudman balanced-budget law, won a second term against Democrat Endicott Peabody, a former Massachusetts governor, and independent Bruce Valley, both critics of the measure.
With 85% of the vote counted, Sununu had 111,706 votes, or 54%, compared with 94,929 votes, or 46%, for McEachern.
New Hampshire’s healthy economy was credited for the victory of the 47-year-old incumbent governor. McEachern, 48, had vowed to stop Seabrook by withdrawing state approval for federally required evacuation plans for the area surrounding the plant, which is finished but unlicensed. A recent poll showed more voters opposed to Seabrook than favoring it.
